About SHBC
On September 7, 1907, twenty-four people met together in a tent to organize a church in the South Harriman Community of East Tennessee.
South Harriman Baptist Church (SHBC) has grown from a group of 24 members meeting under a tent in 1907 to more than 1400 members today. SHBC is one of the largest and most active Southern Baptist congregations in Roane County, Tennessee and ranks in the top 10 percent of Southern Baptist churches in the state of Tennessee.
The Church's first building was constructed and occupied in June 1908. The first full-time pastor was called in 1927.
In 1938, SHBC moved to its present location at 626 Ruritan Road, where a new building was constructed. In January of 1959, an educational building was added. In February 1970, a new sanctuary was constructed. In April of 1986, the church moved into its Family Life Center. After twenty-five years of use, the sanctuary was renovated and rededicated to the Glory of the God on October 12, 1997.
Other facilities include educational buildings, a garage, parking on three sides of the church, a full kitchen, nursery facilties and approximately 6.5 acres of additional land.
South Harriman Baptist Church has had twenty pastors and has sponsored two missions: Child's Memorial Baptist Church and Woody Street mission.
SHBC activities include a very active Sunday School with classes for every age group. The Young At Heart group that has monthly meetings that include lunch, guest speakers and travel activities.
There are Discipleship Training classes on Sunday evening, children and adult choirs, hand bells, Mission Groups, Arms of Love Ministry, a Benevolence Ministry, a tape ministry, Youth Ministries that include Bible Study, mission trips, retreats, conferences, fellowships,and socials.
Sunday's schedule includes Sunday School at 9:45 a.m., morning worship at 10:55 a.m., youth choir at 4:15 p.m., Discipleship training at 5:30 and evening worship at 6:30 p.m.
