On Sunday, September 9, 2007 South Harriman Baptist Church will celebrate 100 years of worship and service in the South Harriman community. The community-wide celebration begins at 9:30 A.M. with special music, remembrances, recognitions and testimonies from current and past members and ministers. Lunch on the grounds will be served from 11:30 until 1:00 at which time those attending will enjoy fellowship and renewal while viewing historical displays assembled on the premises.

The afternoon session will begin at 1:00 P.M. with the ringing of the old church bell and will feature more music, recognitions, and a commemorative sermon by Rev. Edsel West, who served as pastor at the church for twenty-two years.

The church was organized on September 8, 1907 by a group of 20 individuals who met under a tent in South Harriman with J.W. Whaley, J.E. Hughes, J.H. Wyrick and F.K. Sudduth, ministers of the Gospel, leading in the service. The first building was dedicated nine months later on June 7, 1908 across from its present location. In 1938 a new church building was constructed, by the members, at 626 Ruritan Road. Church growth resulted in a new 800 seat sanctuary in 1970, the building of a family life center in 1986, and additional major renovations in 1997. Through the years as God has led and provided the church has made these additions to the facilities and to it’s ministries to meet the ongoing needs of the fellowship and the community.

Rev. Randy Maxwell, pastor, and the congregation of South Harriman Baptist Church invite members of our community to join us in celebration and worship on Sunday, September 9 th at 9:30 A.M. Share lunch with us and/or join us at 1:00 P.M. for the afternoon conclusion of the program. Share our celebration as God’s people remember and give thanks for his direction and care for 100 years at South Harriman Baptist Church!
